Thai Economy Boosted by Over Bt 3 Trillion A Year After NBTC’s 4G Bidding with Over 22 Million 4G Users and Nearly 62 Million Mobile Broadband Users While Average Speed Breaks World’s Record at 25 MBPS

On November 11, 2015, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) organized the bidding of 1800 MHz band, totaling 60 MHz (2x15MHz for 2 sets), which started at 10.00 AM and ended at 07.25 PM on the following day. In addition, the bidding of 900 MHz band, totaling 40 MHz (2x10MHz for 2 sets), was also organized twice on December 15 – 19, 2015 and later on May 27, 2016. Now it has been nearly one year since both 1800 MHz and 900 MHz bands have played a vital role in national developments both in terms of economic and social aspects. This includes generating as high as Bt 232,730 million in bidding revenue for government sector within the period of 4 years starting from 2016 – 2020. In the first year, mobile service operators had already made payment totaling Bt 58,830 million, allowing the government sector carry out national development in various aspects which also included network expansion among mobile service operators. This had put pressure on both winning and non-winning bidders to compete in terms of investment and network expansions.                

In respect to entrepreneur investments during the past year starting from Q3 of 2015 until Q2 of this year, it can be observed that the overall assets investment by three key players within mobile service industry have increased by approximately Bt 100,264 million starting from the beginning of 2015 up until Q2 of 2016. Apart from significant increase in investment by entrepreneurs within the industry, the numbers of mobile internet service user have also multiplied.
